Like many homeowners, you may prefer to try your own hand at fixing things in your house before you consider getting in touch with a professional. You may notice that your roof needs work, and you might want to see if you can handle it yourself. If, however, you notice that you're making any of these mistakes, you probably need to get the help of a professional roofer right away.
Covering Old Shingles with New Ones
If your roof has been losing a lot of shingles or they've been curling up, to save yourself work you may think you can just tack a new layer of roofing shingles right on top of the missing and older ones. This can cause problems for a number of reasons.
For one thing, without removing all the old shingles, you don't have a clear idea of whether there's a more serious roofing issues that needs to be addressed. There could be underlying water damage, for instance, that is making the older shingles loose. A new layer can cover this problem for a time, but you'll eventually have to deal with it.
Another reason to remove all shingles before putting on a new layer is that your town might require it. A call to the office that grants permits in your town is a good idea. A third reason to fight the temptation to put new shingles on top of older and missing ones is that it can result in too much extra weight, which could affect the structure.
Pressure Washing the Roof
A pressure washer can seem like a useful tool for removing dirt and debris from your roof. You may feel comfortable with washing down the surface of the roof every now and then without realizing that this really isn't a good idea. One reason for that is that the pressure may be so strong that it strips your shingles of their granules; granules are part of what gives the shingles their waterproof qualities. Another reason to think twice about pressure washing is that you might not be adequately sure that there are no crevices into which water can seep and create problems for your roof. Unless you know for sure that the process won't harm the roof, you should leave it to professionals or use another method for washing.
You may be able to fix some of your roofing problems. However, if you become unsure about your ability to handle the scope of the work or find yourself making the errors above, it's smart to contact a roofing services company today.
