How To Handle Fire Damage Restoration

Carrie Castillo

If your home, or any part of it, has been damaged by fire, it can be a big job to clean it up and restore things to the way they used to be. Quite often, major fire damage restoration is going to require professionals, However, if you are handy with tools and have some time, you could start to do some of the restoration yourself but there are some things you need to be aware of before you begin.

The most important thing when dealing with fire damage is safety. You need to be sure that the fire department has cleared the area for you to enter. Ask the firemen about any breaches, or areas that are no longer structurally sound. It is best to have these areas blocked off and left for the professionals to handle. They will know how to either strengthen the area enough to work in it or remove the parts that may cave in at any time. In addition, talk with the electric company and make sure that the power is off to the entire property.

Water Removal

The biggest part of fire damage restoration is going to be getting rid of all the water. The fire department hosed down the fire and left quite a bit of sitting water. While this is good and can help prevent any embers from lighting a new fire, it is also a lot of work to get rid of it all. You are going to need to rent industrial pumps and fans and a generator to operate them. Place the equipment where it is most needed, but try to avoid having the fans near any water. You should also rent a machine to express the water from any carpet. Even though you will most likely need to replace the carpet, it is going to be very heavy to move if soaked with water.

Soot Removal

Once you have the majority of the area dry, you can start cleaning the soot from everything. Soot is oily and will require some type of cleaning agent to remove it; soap and water are not going to be enough to get the job done and may end up just smearing it all over. You will also need a large bucket, some cloths, and access to fresh water. Be sure to change the water frequently.

If the fire was contained to a small area you may be able to do the restoration yourself. However, if it consumed a large portion of your home it will probably be better if you have a professional fire damage restoration company do the work. Even if you can get the water and soot removed from the house there are going to be belongings that require special treatment to be restored. Things like books, paintings or artwork, and furniture may need to be sent to the specialists if you are not going to replace them.
