3 Tips To Find The Right Builder

Carrie Castillo

There are many homes already existing on the market. However, these homes may not have the right floorplan or be in the right area for you and your family's needs. Fortunately, building a home allows you to build the home that you want and need in the perfect location. Of course, choosing to build a custom home is not the only decision you need to make — you also need to select the right builder. Here are a few tips to help you find the right builder for your custom home.

Focus on your Needs

If a builder isn't capable of handling your needs, you shouldn't hire them to build your custom home. Even if they're a nice person or have helped your friends or family in the past, it will be important to make sure that they can work well in the style of home that you want as well.

For example, if you are building a traditional-style home, you would not hire a builder that specializes in modern and contemporary designs. If you want a cottage-style, smaller home, you would not choose a builder who specializes in luxury estates.

Focus on your needs and the home you want to build over any other recommendations from friends and family.

Tour the Homes

Before hiring a builder, you should see their work. In most cases, builders will be building a few homes at once, so there should be a few properties available that you can tour.

Touring allows you to determine how efficient the builder and their contractors work. You will also be able to see the contractor's craftsmanship and overall quality of work.

Pay attention to how clean and tidy the job sites are, as well. You want your home to be built efficiently, but you do not want the underlying foundation and walls to be filled with trash and potential rodents or other pests.

Ask about Warranty

Every builder is different, but they should all provide some sort of warranty on the home. The warranties will vary from builder to builder and from element to element of the house.

In most cases, though, a builder will warranty basic parts of the home for a year. This basic warranty will cover issues with the siding, drywall, and paint in most cases. A good builder should also offer a structural warranty, which will cover issues with the home for up to 10 years.

With the right builder, building your new home does not have to be an overwhelming experience. These tips will help you find the right custom home building contractor.
